Independent Record Labels Earned $6.9BN in 2017, Says Report
Global revenues generated by independent record labels reached $6.9 billion in 2017 according to WINTEL 2018, the third report produced for the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN).
That figure was up 10.9% year-on-year compared to 2016, when indie labels generated $6.2bn.

Music Ain’t Enough: Pandora, Deezer Announce Major Podcast Expansions
Nearly 50% of US-based audio listeners enjoy at least one podcast per week.
Apple has largely supported the podcasting format through iTunes, making it the primary distribution platform. But other streaming services like Spotify and Google Play Music have added podcast access as the format has exploded in popularity.
Now, other streaming music services are getting in on the popularity of podcasts. Pandora’s podcast support is now available to everyone, while Deezer focuses on bringing local podcast content to Spanish speakers. Both expansions happened this week.

Apple Has Reportedly Acquired British Startup ‘Platoon’ Focused on Discovering Up-and-Coming Music Artists
Apple has acquired Platoon, a London-based A&R startup focused on discovering rising music artists.
Platoon was founded in 2016 by Saul Klein, co-founder of defunct British video-on-demand service LoveFilm, and Denzyl Feigelson, who is a 40-year music industry veteran and has been advisor to Apple about matters related to iTunes and later Apple Music since 2003, according to his LinkedIn profile.

She Is The Music Launches Global Database for Women Working in Music
She Is The Music (SITM), a nonprofit focused on achieving equality, inclusivity and opportunity for women across the music community is launching a global database for women working in music.
Founded in 2018, SITM was created in response to a music industry study conducted by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealing historically low percentages of women working in music.
In response, SITM has designed actionable programs to increase job opportunities for women and grow the talent pipeline.

Deezer Partners with Triton Digital ‘To Deliver More Value’ for Advertisers
Deezer wants to ‘deliver more value’ to brands looking to advertise on its streaming service.
On December 5, the Paris-based company’s ad-sales house, Deezer Brand Solutions, has announced that it’s teamed up with Triton Digital to improve its advertising capabilities.
The partnership has resulted in the launch of new mobile programmatic audio advertising for Deezer’s free users, which according to Triton will ‘significantly improve advertising efficiency and will bring more value for both brands and its non-paying users’.
