With SXSW coming up right before your eyes, it’s time to start organizing a schedule and planning out your visit to the beautiful city of Austin, Texas for one of the year’s top networking and music events.
With a major revival of Latin music seen throughout U.S. charts in 2018, there’s no better time to educate yourself on the quickly growing genre that goes far beyond Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s chart-topping single “Despacito”–and what better place to do it than SXSW 2019?
1. CNVS
CNVS is an eclectic blend of indie rock/alternative meets singer-songwriter with dynamic vocals that showcase a true love for the craft. Their shows range from intimate and acoustic to full band, filled with anthem-matic moments that you can scream at the top of your lungs. No matter the venue, no matter the time; a show that is fresh and full of passion is always a guarantee.

2. Mahya Veray y su Trauma
Experience warmth and spiritual vibes with this Caribbean fusion of salsa, latin jazz, reggae, afro-beat, rhythm and blues all mixed into one cohesive sound that is Mahya Veray y su Trauma. Currently one of the best voices of Puerto Rico, Mahya Veray integrates her original compositions, her enigmatic, potent, and seductive voice together with her diverse band of local musicians. You don’t want to miss this magic.

3. Epilogio
Epilogio is a musical project created by multi-instrumentalist and musical producer, Armando López; who has been making his mark on the independent scene of Puerto Rico since 2014. Epilogio has just released its anticipated third production titled “Modo”, in which its sound reinvents itself by incorporating electronic, funk and dance to its indie rock formula.

4. Nutopia
Nutopia is a Latin indie pop band that has no limits. They’ve been recognized on numerous occasions by local and international publications for their solid songwriting, a focus on narratives/melodic content, and making latin music in a format people from latin america aren’t very accustomed to. They incorporate melodic chorus features with electronic, alternative beats to create a fluid display of what latin alternative music could be.

5. DJ Blass
A legend in the dembow genre, Dj Blass has introduced a whole new way of doing Latin Music. He mixes traditional sounds with new rhythms in the best way possible. There’s an obvious marriage of hip-hop and funky electronic sounds brought together seamlessly to create music that makes you need to get up and dance.

6. La Ronera
Composed of seven Bogota musicians, La Ronera fuses elements of Latin music, reggae, ska and rock. These vibes are sure to have you feeling good with a contagious sound that invites you to celebrate life. Expect to feel their message of hope and empowerment at every one of their shows. La Ronera wants you to stand up and enjoy yourself. They believe in never conforming and living life to the fullest. If you’re in need of a good time, you definitely do not want to miss their live set at SXSW.

7. Méne
If you’re into teenage angsty, mellow RnB music similar to Drake, The Weeknd, and Miguel, you’ve found your new obsession. Méne will have you in your feels with his velvety smooth vocals and a focus on heartbreak in all its forms. Sit back and relax to his newest release, ‘A Lo Mejor’, a song produced by Stelvio and expresses the uncertainty that exists in a failed relationship.

8. Menino Bulle
Tune in to Menino Bulle and you’ll find mixtures of genres ranging from soul, house, R&B, Rock, chill-wave to pop with Spanish lyrics. Their song, “Eon” is the ultimate testament to trippy, electronic trance that you don’t know you need until you hear it. You’ll find yourself floating away as their intricate sounds grace your ears with precision and passion.

9. Monstruos del Mañana
Experience latin rhythms like never before as Monstruos del Mañana mixes psychedelic, flowing rhythms with ethereal vocals that are meant to inspire you to travel and explore the senses. They incorporate tropical, Latin rhythms to make you feel their same sense of exploration that they themselves found through creating music like this. Their newest album spent a long time in the making, but it reflects a creative passion that flows within the group as a whole.

10. Mundaka
With influences from 80’s new wave and post-punk, Mundaka develops carefully crafted pop songs with atmospheric landscapes lightly placed over a solid rhythmic section creating what is known as “Dream Surf”. Their sound is both fresh and nostalgic, like Morrissey meets Sublime all is one package. They return to SXSW with an optimistic outlook and a craving for creative exploration.
