How To Legally Release A Cover Song and Earn Royalties
How does it work?
Let’s say you’ve gone into the studio and produced an amazing version of a song by an artist like Beyonce, Guns N Roses, or even U2. With Easy Song Licensing, you can obtain a License and legal permission to be able to release that song through Symphonic.
Simple as that.
No lawyers. No major expenses. All you have to do is pay the Easy Song Licensing fee, add the number of units you intend to sell, and you’re all set!
Before you start, there are some things you need to know…
Here’s what you should know:
- A cover song must be a completely original song and cannot contain samples or anything from the original work. So while we accept cover songs, we don’t accept songs with samples unless you’ve given us the necessary paperwork to distribute a song that contains samples. (If you want to legally license samples, you can do so here: www.tracklib.com)
- While the Music Modernization Act confirms that you don’t need a license for a cover song for distributing to streaming providers (and only streaming providers), we recommend you get a license. (It’s a requirement that, if you plan on having your music distributed to download stores, you get this and then also send it to us for filing.
- In addition, download stores are still active. So, if you want your material on Apple Music and Amazon’s download stores, then you must have a license.
Through this partnership, we make this easier than ever.
It’s not only simple, but also very affordable to obtain the mechanical licenses required in order to legally sell and distribute cover songs in any format (download, CD, vinyl, etc.).
How much is it?
Pay only $16.99 + Royalties. (The lowest priced service in the industry.)
Songs that are in the Public Domain do not require licensing. If Easy Song Licensing discovers that a song is in the Public Domain after you have paid them, don’t worry. They will refund all fees and royalties for that song immediately.
