BYOBottle
The Sustainable Concerts Working Group (SCWG) is a collaboration of music industry leaders and environmental advocates who believe in an environmentally responsible and sustainably driven music community. They started the BYOBottle Campaign, which encourages artists, venues, festivals, and fans to reduce plastic pollution in the music industry by promoting reusable water bottles and water refill stations both backstage and front of house at music events.
Through this campaign, artists are also encouraged to travel with reusable water bottles and include language in their rider asking venues to provide water refill options backstage, while venues, festivals, and promoters commit to providing water refill stations for artists and fans. As a fan, you can also make the BYOBottle commitment and show your support of the music industry’s efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste right here.

Given their unparalleled reach, they have a unique opportunity to help artists and audiences engage with climate issues. The Pact they created sets out a series of high-level commitments that serve as a declaration of intent for the global music sector. It brings together key actors (the independent music community, major music groups, and others) to align as a sector and address our biggest environmental impacts in an efficient and collaborative way.
They believe that through collective action and a unified voice, the music industry will be best-placed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate our contribution to global climate change, and ignite broader societal action on the climate crisis.

Sound Future
Founded by music and climate industry pros, Sound Future is on a mission to turn live events into a force for good when it comes to the planet. The nonprofit helps artists, venues, and promoters reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing the experience. They offer tools like a climate-conscious vendor directory (so you can actually find sustainable catering, waste services, and more), and they work behind the scenes to track event emissions and recommend solutions that align with both climate goals and business needs.
One of their standout projects, the Surf & Turf Program, funnels funding from events into restoring ecosystems like reefs, wetlands, and grasslands, turning concert revenue into real-world climate action. With folks like Wesley Schultz from The Lumineers on the board, they’re combining star power with smart strategy to push the industry forward.

Musicians for Sustainability
Musicians for Sustainability is a grassroots initiative that helps artists and venues make their live events more eco-friendly. Through a simple pledge, musicians encourage venues to adopt at least three out of six sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy, eliminating single-use plastics, offering reusable cups, and encouraging low-carbon travel. Venues are then certified with a “leaf” rating based on how many sustainable actions they’ve implemented, ranging from 1 to 4 leaves. This system makes it easy for fans and artists to find and support eco-conscious venues. By signing the pledge, artists and venues work together to make sustainability a seamless part of the live music experience.
Rock The Ocean
Based in Fort Lauderdale, Rock the Ocean combines music and marine conservation to raise awareness about the issues affecting our oceans. Beyond the festival, the foundation supports ocean-focused scientific research, education, and conservation programs around five key areas: sharks, sea turtles, marine mammals, coral reefs, and marine habitats. Their year-round work includes community cleanups, sea oat planting, and sustainability initiatives like banning single-use plastics and promoting waste diversion. Since launching, they’ve raised over $4 million and partnered with more than 100 ocean conservation organizations worldwide.
