Every artist has a story… one filled with bold moves, quiet breakthroughs, and the moments that shift everything. Your Story Starts Here is a series dedicated to capturing these journeys. So, we handed Tipa Tipo a disposable camera and asked them to document their world, giving us a peek into the spaces and sparks behind their sound. For them, that world bridges the energy of New York City with roots that trace back to Lima, Perú. NYC may be their current home, but the spirit of where they started still pulses through every beat. Alongside these snapshots, we caught up with them to talk about their path so far, the cultural connections that shape their music, and the creative fuel that keeps them going. 📸 Here’s how their story began…
Your Story Starts Here: A Chapter of Tipa Tipo
The Story of Tipa Tipo

Tipa Tipo is a tropical yacht-pop trio blending soft rock with the pulse of Latin rhythms to create something refreshingly unique. Originally formed in Lima, Perú in 2011 and now based in NYC, the band draws influence from everything from Peruvian cumbia to vintage synth-pop, fusing nostalgic textures with modern flair.
Led by co-producers Adele Fournet and Felipe Wurst, with Jordan Auber on drums and percussion, Tipa Tipo crafts their signature sound at The Honey Jar, a Brooklyn studio where analog warmth meets digital precision. Their music is dreamy yet danceable, experimental yet undeniably catchy… proof that genre lines are made to be blurred.
🎙️ We talked with Tipa Tipo about their story, what inspires them, and more. Check out what they said below…
How does your community inspire you?
“We feel so appreciative of having a strong sense of creative music community both in New York City and Lima, and also with other collaborators scattered across the world. We are inspired by their artistry, their musical skills, and their commitment to creativity as a way of life.”
Why do you create music in New York? (Why here, vs. another city?)
“New York City is the ultimate genre melting pot, with people bringing their musical influences from every corner of the world. It’s this hybridity, mixed with the grit and experimental edge that NYC offers, that feels so special about this city. But the most important thing is to have the space and time to dedicate to our craft, and to have a supportive community around us (whether they are close by or all over). In this sense, we find inspiration in so many different places and feel like artists can grow and evolve anywhere they feel inspired.”
What are your favorite music venues in your city?
“Barbés, TV Eye, C’Mon Everybody“
What are your favorite record stores in New York?
“Order vinyls online from Eric at Names You Can Trust!”
What are your favorite local music festivals?
“Secret Planet Showcase at DROM (NYC), Rhoneymeade Festival (Pennsylvania), Barbés in the Woods (Massachusetts)”
What influence has your city had on your music?
“NYC is the kind of place where no one will tell you ‘No.’ You can play any style you want, any instrument you want. Nothing is too weird or experimental. And there’s no age cap on artists. It’s a city that will embrace a 20-year-old and a 70-year-old playing on the same bill, because we’re here for the art. It’s exciting for us to inject that ethos into our music, whether we are playing a show here or somewhere else in the world, or if someone is listening to our music in another country. One of our songs, “Morir Bailando,” says: “solo quiero ser la vieja que se muere bailando” [I just want to be the old woman who dies dancing]. This captures our greatest aspiration: to be artists as a life-long practice.”
