In the world of music, building the right relationships is just as important as building the right sound. That’s where our A&R and Client Development teams come in. At Symphonic, these team members are dedicated to discovering talent, expanding opportunities, and helping artists reach new markets around the globe. 🎧 💫 In this spotlight, we’re highlighting Christine Su from our Client Development team, who leads our efforts in Taiwan. What do you look for when signing new artists to Symphonic? / What genre do you focus on?
“Compatibility is very important when I’m signing artists and labels, but we welcome any music genres! Especially for those who want to expand their international markets or believe their target audience is outside of their region.”
What’s one service or tool at Symphonic that you think more artists should take advantage of?
“Our pitching tool! Each label and artist has one A&R, a client manager, and our marketing team to support their amazing work. In the SMS, there is a feature called “DSP pitching/marketing drivers,” which our marketing team in the US views every day and reaches out to DSPs to pitch placements for our clients. As my artists and labels’ A&R, I also work with our Asia client manager to pitch directly to DSPs in APAC regions based on each product’s focused market.”
When talking to artists, what’s something you encourage them to prioritize for long-term success?
“Building international audiences. Breaking into a new market is never easy, and before getting booked by festivals and promoters, we need to make sure their music is available in the market. Then, they need to have a good distro partner to help them grow their listeners on DSPs. It takes time. It’s not magic, and it doesn’t happen overnight. However, as long as they commit and put in the work, they are already ahead of other artists who haven’t even started.”
What’s a common mistake you see artists or labels make when trying to grow their audience?
“When they only focus on local live performance opportunities… even though they want to grow their audience in new markets. Without a proper online AND offline strategy working together, they’re missing out on the chance for long-term development in their market and beyond.”
What’s one trend you’re seeing in the industry that artists should be paying attention to right now?
“Artists used to only collaborate with other artists in similar music genres, but now I have seen hip-hop artists working with punk bands, pop artists collaborating with metal bands, etc. People are thinking outside the box now. They are learning how to speak to new audiences that they may have never had the chance to reach before. How can we know if they even like our music if we never show them?”
What’s been the most rewarding part of working with independent artists at Symphonic?
“The most rewarding part is that we grow together with our artists. We are part of their team and part of the journey. We are with them at every stage. When they are recognized and their music is recognized, it’s the most rewarding moment for all of us.”
What advice would you give an artist who’s just starting to think seriously about their music?
“It’s easier to make music as an independent artist now than ever before, but the music market is also more competitive than ever. Consistently putting effort and work into your music is the best long-term solution. Don’t feel frustrated if your latest released single doesn’t get into multiple playlists right away. The goal is to build your name as a brand. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Just because you don’t see results immediately doesn’t mean that dream finish line isn’t down the line waiting for you! It just takes consistency and commitment.”
Who are you listening to/loving right now?
“SherryZ is one of our artists who was just recently nominated for the Golden Melody Awards as the best new artist! She has been making music for over ten years. After joining our client (label) Kafka by the Sea, they rebranded and re-presented her to the industry, and the fans fell in love with her beautiful voice and undeniable talent. For her first album with the label, she had already been recognized by the biggest Chinese-language awards! That’s very impressive. Also, I’m obsessed with her style!”
