The Story of Astrocolor

Astrocolor began as a group of friends experimenting with sounds that didn’t quite fit inside traditional genres. What started as late-night sessions on the West Coast, blending jazz structures with psychedelic textures and electronic beats, quickly took shape as something new: a sound the band would later dub “AstroJazz.”

From those early jams in Victoria, British Columbia, the project evolved into a six-album journey that has earned them recognition at the Western Canadian Music Awards, including multiple nominations and a win for Instrumental Artist of the Year. Along the way, their music has shifted from the exploratory deep-space voyage of Moonlighting – AstroJazz Vol. 1 to the more earthbound reflections of their 2024release, Stargazing – AstroJazz Vol. 2.

For Astrocolor, music has always been about exploration, pushing boundaries, layering live instrumentation with electronic elements, and seeing how far they can stretch the idea of “jazz” without losing its soul. Each project builds on that foundation, expanding their universe while keeping one foot grounded in improvisation and collaboration.

What began as an experiment has become a signature sound, one that continues to evolve, drawing listeners into a world where groove, texture, and imagination collide.

How does your community inspire you?

“Victoria is not only a beautiful place, but also a city teeming with musical talent. Pulling in local talent for recording sessions or sharing the stage with killer acts is a well of endless inspiration and creativity for us.”

Why do you create music in Victoria? (Why here, vs. another city?)

“Victoria is surrounded on three sides by ocean and sweeping mountain views. It’s big enough to have several great shows happening on any given night, and small enough that you can walk or bike to any of them. It’s a really unique and wonderful place to make art and enjoy the natural beauty.”

What influence does your city have on your music?

“Victoria crowds are widely accepting of multiple genres, so being supported by our hometown fans definitely emboldens us to flex our creativity and songwriting in many directions. We’ve jumped from funk to house to disco in a set and had the dancefloor encourage us and propel the vibe higher. That feedback has taken us from albums of dance bangers, to tropical lounge, to jazz – and now we are working on an 80s party meets neo-soul album called Hard Yes (release date TBA).”

What are your favorite venues to see live music in your area?

“Lucky Bar certainly stands out. For decades, they have made everyone feel like there is a place for them and their tastes. And playing the Lucky stage is like a rite of passage as a band or artist steps into the music culture and industry in Victoria. Also, a shout out to Upstairs, which has updated to a fantastic stage and sound system, as well as many great shows over the years at the Capital Ballroom.”

Got any favorite record stores in your city?

“Ditch and Vinyl Envy have you covered, and Supreme Echo if you’re looking for rare punk.”

What about favorite local music festivals?

“We’ve played so many memorable sets at Phillips Backyard, Song & Surf, and Laketown Ranch. The former gives you the urban vibes, and the latter two are out in the West Coast forest.”
